IEEE Global Communications Conference
9-13 December 2018 // Abu Dhabi, UAE
Gateway to a Connected World

Message from the Technical Program Committee Chair

On behalf of the Technical Program Committee, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the IEEE GLOBECOM 2018 for the first time ever in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Under the theme of “Gateway to a Connected World,” IEEE GLOBECOM 2018 brings together researchers from all over the world to discuss the latest advances in communications technology. IEEE GLOBECOM 2018 marks the first of it series being held in a Middle Eastern country.

The technical program of IEEE GLOBECOM 2018 consists of 12 symposia, 10 tracks on Selected Areas in Communications, 27 workshops, 24 tutorials, as well as industry sessions. The conference also features six interesting keynote speakers who will highlight the state-of-the art advancements in wireless communications, 5G, and the Internet-of-Things, among other emerging topics in telecommunications systems. Together, all these forums present cutting-edge advances of both the scientific and industrial developments in modern telecommunications engineering.

The main symposia of IEEE GLOBECOM 2018 received 2562 paper submissions from 76 countries, out of which 999 papers have been accepted – corresponding to an acceptance rate of 38.9%. All papers have undergone a rigorous peer review process – every symposium paper was reviewed by at least 3 independent experts, with many receiving even more reviews. In addition to the main symposia, IEEE GLOBECOM 2018 features workshops on emerging and important topics in the field, which will be held on the first and last day of the conference. A large number of proposals for the workshops were carefully scrutinized with only half of submitted workshop proposals were finally accepted. The 27 accepted workshops in total received 690 submissions among which 317 papers have been accepted. Most of the technical symposia papers will be presented in lecture style, while some papers will be presented in interactive sessions for in-depth discussions among respective authors and the conference attendees. The quality of papers in lecture-style and interactive sessions is the same. The only criterion to assign a paper to an interactive session is topic homogeneity. Under the current policy of the Communications Society, all papers must be presented by their authors, which will increase the discussions and lead to fruitful technical exchanges.

I would like to especially thank the TPC Vice-Chairs, Pascal Lorenz and Sonia Aissa, Symposium Co-Chairs, Workshop Co-Chairs, Tutorial Co-Chairs, and IF&E Chairs, as well as the many hundred members of the technical program committee members and the external reviewers for their dedication. Without their help, this conference would not be possible. I would also like to thank the Keynote Speaker Co-Chairs, and the keynote speakers for contributing to this important part of the program.

I look forward to welcome you all in Abu Dhabi!
